5. Governor Bevin's Foreign Policies Are Immoral Because They

Discriminate Against Palestinians and Promote War In the Middle East

It is a myth that governors don't have anything to do with US foreign policies. On November 15, 2018, Governor Matt Bevin signed an executive order prohibiting state contracts with companies that participate in boycott, divestment, and sanction (BDS) practices against Israel. Without any input from the public, Kentucky became the 26th state to enact a law or executive order that will penalize companies that support BDS practices.

The signing ceremony included Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer, Consul General of Israel to the Southeast United States Judith Varnai Shorer, State Representative Tim Moore (R), and representatives from the Jewish Community Relations Council and Christians United for Israel (CUFI).

“The State of Israel is an important friend and trading partner to the Commonwealth,” said Gov. Bevin. “We will not allow state resources to benefit entities that intentionally engage in discriminatory practices to harm the sovereignty and economic prosperity of any ally nation. Today’s executive order makes it clear that Kentucky condemns the BDS movement and that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our friend, Israel.” Bevin seemed to be unaware that this kind of executive order discriminates against Palestinians and raises the risk of another deadly war in the Middle East.

Ever since the Six-Day War in 1967 when Israel acquired control of the Occupied Territories by means of a military offensive, the Government of Israel has been violently oppressing the Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. UN Resolution 242, passed after the Six-Day War, refers to the "inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East in which every State in the area can live in security." The US and Israel, however, have been blocking a diplomatic settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for the last 50 years. If this conflict isn't solved through negotiations and nonviolent strategies such as the BDS movement, more wars are inevitable, and the next war could trigger a wider conflict, a nuclear war, and the end of all human life on earth.

Gov. Bevin, the 25 other states that have passed similar measures, and a bill introduced in 2017 in the US Congress (S.720 - The Israel Anti-Boycott Act - read more here), are trying to compel the American people to take sides in an international conflict. It is an immoral policy because it supports the oppressors - Israel and the US - while harming the oppressed Palestinians who are trying to survive and eventually form their own country in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

All religions condemn the oppression of the powerless, and all religions call for peace among the peoples of the world. Matt Bevin is a bad Christian for signing this immoral executive order. One of the first acts of the Young/French Administration will be to nullify this executive order. We will also urge the General Assembly to pass a resolution opposing all such immoral bills that reward the oppressors and harm the victims, wherever they live.
